Kabwe skull
The Kabwe skull, the first ancient hominid fossil ever found in Africa, was discovered not by paleoanthropologists but by miners.
This species, H. heidelbergensis, was one of a number of hominid species living in Europe between 500,000 and 40,000 years ago.
Few hominid fossils have been found in eastern Asia from the period between 200,000 and 50,000 years ago. This skull from central China resembles those of certain hominids living in Europe and Africa at this time.
